Micro-credit

Access to business capital by active-poor people is a big hurdle. They find it difficult to obtain loans from banks, and the interest they have to pay is discouraging. Microcredit services are small loans made available to small producers otherwise known as the active poor to enable them start new productive activities, grow or sustain existing ones. Also, it is a means of extending credit, usually in the form of small loans to members with the group savings as collateral, to non-traditional under-served borrowers. The primary aim is to enhance the wellbeing of the underprivileged through improved access to small loans which are not provided by formal business institutions. Uromi JDPCI started a micro-credit scheme to assist micro-credit group members to start, expand or sustain their businesses. The scheme has helped many beneficiaries with a high degree of loan recovery. There is the need to invest more funds in the scheme so as to serve many more beneficiaries, and to provide financial literacy and social enterprise development education to those served.
